AUSTRALIAN UNIQUE QUALITY

Australia has healthier bees and is more diverse

The medicinal power of Australian Manuka all comes down to the diverse range of Manuka plants our bees visit to collect the nectar that they turn into delicious, pure, active honey. We benefit from having some of

the healthiest bees in the world, thanks to the clean and untouched environments. This combination of healthy bees and diverse original flora makes Australian honey some of the best in the world.

SOME OF THE MOST POWERFUL MANUKA HONEY IN THE WORLD COMES FROM AUSTRALIA, NATURALLY.

AUSTRALIAN HISTORY

Australian honey dates back to the 1820s

Honey bees were introduced to Australia from the 1820s, and ever since we have been producing many beautiful and unique Manuka honeys. Although first discovered in New Zealand, some very active plant varieties have been found in Australia too. In fact,

Australia has over 80 species of the plant that produces Manuka, while New Zealand has just one (which actually evolved in Australia first and spread to New Zealand later). A current, multi-centre scientific research project looking at Australian Manuka has made exciting findings.

1776

Leptospermums first described by Johann Forster

Johann Forster's 1776 study introduced Leptospermums, describing them as endemic to Australia with many species uniquely evolved over millions of years, thriving in harsh conditions with distinctive foliage and flowers.

1822

The European honey bee is introduced to Australia

In 1822, European Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) introduced to Australia initiated Manuka honey production, establishing Australia as its original source, known for its distinct taste and color compared to Eucalyptus or Clover honey.

1988

Unique therapeutic benefits of Manuka discovered

Research carried out in the 1980s identified the unique therapeutic benefits of Manuka honey when used in a clinical setting (Molan & Russell, 1988). As a result, there has been a significant increase in demand and research.

1996

Largest number of native Leptospermum species is found

Australia is home to 84 of the 87 known Leptospermum species worldwide, including the Leptospermum Scoparium species. Only one species is found in New Zealand, with the NZ species originating in Australia.

2009

Manuka's role in the fight against antibiotic-resistant pathogens

Studies have uncovered that bacteria with resistance to modern antibiotics (becoming superbugs) cannot develop resistance to the activity of Manuka honey.

AUSTRALIAN TESTING

Strict standards and testing for accuracy.

The Australian Manuka Honey Association (AMHA), in partnership with leading scientists, has established a set of standards for authentic Australian Manuka honey. As well as MGO and DHA, leptosperin is a naturally occurring chemical found only in the nectarof Manuka plants, and it is a stable marker of the authenticity of real Manuka honey.

So, all active Australian Manuka honey that carries the AMHA Mark of Authenticity must be pure natural honey, produced entirely in Australia, and be tested by an independent, approved laboratory.
